that sort of spoils my "the next stop on our journey" opener, but struggling through our post new years eve celebrations we took a mini bus back to bangkok to board our overnight bus to phuket. overnight transportation in my opinion is the best way to go - not only do you save money on a night's accommodation, you also don't have to waste any time traveling during your trip. you wake up and you're at your next destination. admittedly, the last time i did the whole overnight transport thing it landed me in a train car with a few interesting characters on the way to florence, but i figured the benefit was worth me taking my chances.
here comes the advice part: if you are going to do an overnight bus. spend the extra money and book "vip." the buses are clean, the people are less creepy, and they give you water and plenty of snacks. best of all, they give you an awesome blanket (that i wanted to steal) and the chairs pretty much fully recline so you can actually get sleep. the only downside on our bus was that they played a very loud movie of some thai concert, but pretty sure i saw a few "first class" buses with fewer passengers that looked well-rested and happy so vip wins.
vip style
phuket was the second leg of my winnings from the red shoe ball, so we had pre-booked accommodation at the imperial adamas resort. of course we didn't look up where this was and didn't realize how large phuket actually was when we arrived at 8 am. of course it was also the only time on our whole trip that it rained. after figuring out that the taxi drivers weren't ripping us off and it actually did cost us 600 baht to get to our resort, we set off to naiyang beach.
the resort was gorgeous and given that phuket did end up being so large - we decided to take the couple days we had there to literally do nothing. well not literally nothing but our itinerary the first day went a little something like this:
wake up
go to the pool
walk on the beach
back to the pool
eat a snack
back to the pool
shower
walk to naiyang beach for dinner
back to the room
put on silk robes and order dessert from room service
the beds i had a hard time leaving every morning. to go to the pool chairs...
view from our balcony. yes OUR personal balcony.
the pool that wrapped around the entire resort and ended in the middle with an infinity pool overlooking the beach. sigh.
even the bathroom was so beautiful i had to take a photo. don't act like you're not interested.
and somewhere near reception i started taking artsy photos.
sunset on the beach behind the resort. i'll spare you the one of me posing.
naiyang beach by night.
it was weird not doing anything for a couple of days, as alex and i are both the sort of travelers that go to places with a checklist and want to see everything there is to be seen, but we reminded ourselves that some people go on vacation literally just to relax. and it was phuking nice.
